Die
Another Day
by Douglas Pratt
Most of the big action sequences are ridiculously silly
and the opening title song, which contains deliberate dropouts,
is pure torture, but still the new James Bond movie, Die Another
Day, which is being issued by MGM Home Entertainment as a two-platter
Widescreen Special Edition (1004346, $30), is an enjoyable
adventure, bouncing all over the world, fooling around with all
sorts of gadgets, and depicting a life of suave luxury, punctuated
with energetic violence.

Fast 2 Furious came out roaring with an estimated $51.4
million debut that put it a lap ahead of the pack at the finish
line on Sunday. It was the second straight $50 million plus
(an industry record with The Hulk looming for the hat
trick) opener for Universal and that won’t hurt when the company
negotiates an imminent sale. And while the new entry paled
critically in comparison to its inspiration, it easily bettered
the original’s then surprising $40 million bow.

Fast 2 Furious
by Leonard Klady
The
new film almost systematically wrings out every drop of originality
of F & F and replaces it with cliché and convention.
If truth in advertising were possible it would be more appropriately
dubbed 2 Banal 2 Predictable. Its organic soundtrack has been replaced
with cookie cutter music and pop tunes; the high octane races have
been redeployed as arcade thrill rides; and the other race card
- formerly street smart - now has the friendly feel of cushy call
backs from central casting.

The Show Me State
by David Poland
We
have created an environment of "Show Me," rather than
"I Can't Wait."
What
ever happened to waiting to love something rather than waiting to
be disappointed?
Remember? I do. I
remember the stupid joy of Ghostbusters… playing hooky from
work to see Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade… paying
some kids to wait in line in Westwood for Batman… and on
and on…

War
& Peace
byDouglas Pratt
For
Leo Tolstoy’s paradigmatic large novel, “War and Peace”, the Soviet
Russian filmmaker, Sergei Bondarchuk, made four separate
films between 1965 and 1967. The
films have traditionally been screened as a single 7-hour work,
usually split in half with two films per screening, and it was as
that complete work that the 403-minute production earned a Best
Foreign Film Oscar in 1968 (actually, some sequences that were removed
from the original screening have since been restored).
